Julie Bryant, PhD
As Rancho BioSciences introduces its new identity, Founder and CEO Julie Bryant shares the story behind the company and the beliefs that shaped it. From the early days of systems biology to today’s era of AI-driven research, Rancho has focused on one mission: helping scientists turn complex biomedical data into structured, reusable information that accelerates discovery.
I learned early in my career that discoveries often go missing, not because we lack ideas, but because we overlook the data sitting right in front of us. That belief has shaped every team I have led and every company I have built. It is also the reason Rancho BioSciences exists today.
Before Rancho, I co-founded GeneGo in 2000 with a concept and a credit card. We bet on systems biology long before it became mainstream. Our pathway platform helped scientists understand complex biology in new ways. When GeneGo joined Thomson Reuters, I carried forward one lesson. When information is organized well, science moves faster and decisions become clearer.
After GeneGo, I spent years traveling to pharma sites around the world. I saw brilliant scientists running expensive experiments, answering one question, and discarding the rest of the data. The unused data still held value. It could have supported more comparisons, more insight, and more ideas. What was missing was structure, time, and expertise. I knew exceptional scientists who could curate and harmonize this information. I also knew most people did not want to do that work. We loved it. That was the moment Rancho BioSciences began to take shape.
My first hire was the exceptional Tatiana Khasanova, who had also been with me at GeneGo. We built Rancho around a simple idea. If we turn raw, disconnected data into high quality, structured information, scientists can discover faster and patients can benefit sooner.
As science evolved, so did Rancho. We began with data curation and became known globally for rigor and quality. We made data FAIR before FAIR had a name. As the volume and variety of biomedical data expanded, we grew into bioinformatics so curated data could generate insight. Then we added data engineering to support scale, cloud and automation teams to support speed, and data science and machine learning groups to support deeper analysis.
Across hundreds of projects, the biggest challenges in life sciences appear again and again. Data scattered across modalities slows discovery. Inconsistent metadata weakens reproducibility. Scientists lose valuable time preparing data instead of exploring ideas. Organizations treat data as a one time task instead of an asset that can be reused, extended, and enriched. And as AI becomes central to discovery, teams learn that algorithms cannot compensate for poorly prepared data.
Rancho exists to solve these problems. We deliver structured, harmonized, reusable datasets and build the systems and workflows that allow organizations to get more value from complex multimodal data. When the data foundation is strong, everything downstream becomes faster, more reliable, and more impactful.
Today Rancho is a global biomedical data science company working with many of the world's leading pharma, biotech, and research organizations. Our work spans strategic consulting, curation and knowledge automation, data engineering, bioinformatics, data science, and AI enabled data products across oncology, immunology, neuroscience, gastrointestinal conditions, and rare diseases. What we do today is the result of what our customers have needed at each stage of scientific progress.
They needed help scaling curation, so we built global teams of expert scientists. They needed insights from complex datasets, so we built one of the strongest bioinformatics organizations in the industry. They needed engineering, cloud, and automation, so we expanded our capabilities. They needed modern, reusable data for next generation research, so we developed data products and alliances across single cell, spatial biology, and oncology. As AI matured, they needed responsible frameworks and support for Agentic AI, so we built those systems too. Every step of our evolution has been guided by what our clients needed to advance science.
As Rancho has grown, so has our identity. Our new brand reflects who we are today. A trusted partner for scientists and R&D teams who need high quality data, deep domain expertise, and a team committed to the outcomes that matter. Our visual identity expresses what we call the Rancho triad. Scientific intelligence, data mastery, and applied AI. Together, these strengths allow us to turn data into information that can be used with confidence.
The Data Foundation Behind Scientific Discovery
Our brand captures our purpose. Rancho helps organizations solve big scientific problems by giving them the data foundation they need. We support the people doing the hard work of science. And we make sure the data behind that work is trustworthy, consistent, reusable, and ready for the future.
Great science begins when the data is right. At Rancho, we will always be the team that makes the data right. I invite you to explore our new identity and our capabilities. If you want a partner who understands the science, the data, and the technology, we would love to connect.
